Rick Mears is a legendary four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, capturing victories in 1979, 1984, 1988 and 1991. His 1984 winning speed averaged 163.612 mph. Driving for Roger Penske in the Pennzoil Z-7, a Penske-March-Cosworth, Mears won without taking the pole position—the only time he accomplished that feat in his four Indy 500 victories.
Known as “Rocket Rick,” Mears holds the record for the most Indianapolis 500 pole positions, with six: 1979, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1991. He was also a three-time Indy car series champion, winning titles in 1979, 1981 and 1982.
