Tom Sneva, nicknamed “The Gas Man,” won the 1983 Indianapolis 500 after finishing second in 1977, 1978 and 1980. His winning speed averaged 162.117 mph. Driving the March-Cosworth Texaco Star for Bignotti-Cotter, Sneva led 98 laps and earned $385,886.
An outstanding qualifier, Sneva won the Indianapolis 500 pole position three times—in 1977, 1978 and 1984. He was also the fastest qualifier in 1981, but under the rules in effect at the time, he did not start from the pole.
